When starting the journey to going to university i think i was more excited to join a society than i was to start my course in Broadcast Journalism! I had set my sights on cheerleading from day one, i used to dance when i was younger and had always regretted it and was thinking about joining a cheerleading team in my local town but felt i was too old. So when i applied for Nottingham Trent i saw that the Trent Tigers were an amazing team after watching there performances at the varsities. I knew from then i wanted to make the team.
So all summer i went for runs every day and got my strength up as well as stretching so i could become more flexible. When i got to uni and went to the freshers fair to sign up for all the societies, through my hungover bleary eyes i came to the cheerleading stand and signed up, i took note when tryouts where and got even more excited.
Tryouts came around and i was so nervous going to the sports hall for the first time not knowing anyone, but everyone is in the same boat so its easy to talk to people and make new friends. We first all lined up in height order to see what positions we were going to be, i was desperate not to be a flyer because i was terrified of heights! But i was given base which means i throw the girls up in the air. We then learnt the dance routine going over and over it.
Tryout day came and i was so so nervous, our group auditioned in front of head coach and two girls from the committee. I went wrong and thought that i would not be chosen for the Varsity squad.
But after been recalled with a number of other girls, the committee decided to make a new squad for us called Performance Squad.
Throughout the year we had two hours of practice a week and worked towards a routine for our end of year showcase. It was tough in training because when you learn new lifts and moves its so hard when your group hits a wall and cannot hit them, but i had the best stunt group so we practiced more and hit all of our moves.
As well as training hard for our showcase, we went to Ocean Wednesdays, the messiest night out of the week, but the girls make it so much fun!
When the season ended i was so sad that i wouldn't be going to training every week! But i applied to do Pre Season, which is where we put together a routine to preform at Saturday antics for all the freshers. I am so excited to get back with the girls and see what the committee have in store for us this year, hopefully making our squad even bigger and better!
